Modesty

8 Adar Bet, 5774  Jerusalem

Modesty in dress is an important value.

In recent years, to my chagrin, it has become fashionable, for example, for people to wear their pants so their underwear is showing behind. I.e., belts have become obsolete. This is grungy and cheap in my opinion.

Jewish Law gives guidelines for modest dress.

For example:

For women:

Arms covered at least to elbow

Legs covered at least to knee, preferably with skirt rather than pants, because pants reveal more of the outline of the body.

For men:

less important but above  guidelines are also good, except men should not wear skirts, unless they are in Scotland playing a bagpipe.
